Hello and welcome to my blog! AfrikanRising is a place where I (Eyek) discuss (complete) health, beauty, and social justice. As a twentysomething year old Nigerian, I'm sharing my stories, from my struggles with self acceptance, to my favorite skincare products.

I created this blog because I want you to feel something, whether that's joy, sadness or a desire to self-reflect. I'm learning and growing everyday and I want you to learn and grow with me. Join me on this journey and watch this African rise.

Lip Series Part 1: How To Find The Perfect Brown & Nude Lipstick

Lip Series Part 1: How To Find The Perfect Brown & Nude Lipstick

"Dark skinned women can't wear____"

"If you're ____'s complexion, don't wear this"

I'm sure that we've all heard one of these phrases or something along these lines. In addition to seeing and hearing these things, when you do find what you think is the perfect nude, when you put it on, you look washed out or ashy.

We've all been there, I think I sort of have a solution. First of all, let's talk about undertones.

Undertones:

There are three general undertones,  Cool, Warm, and Neutral. Those of us with cool undertones generally have pink or blue tones in our skin. Those of us with warm undertones have yellow or golden tones in our skin (most common for darker complexion black women), and neutral undertones are a mix of cool and warm tones. This can affect what type of nude you decide to get. Additionally, it all about preference. I personally don't follow the undertone rule when it comes to nudes and browns, but it's a good place to start.

To be completely honest with you, I think that't how everyone should pick their nudes and browns. Whichever one makes you feel more like Beyonce, wear that, regardless of your undertone. Now I will let you in on a little secret: ANY lipstick looks flattering with the right lip liner. DO NOT underestimate the power of lip liner, people.

Generally, when you're wearing a nude lip, you should be using a lip liner  that is brown, whether it's light brown or dark brown. You can also use a dark brown liquid lipstick like "Limbo" by Colourpop (I will tell you more about this lipstick later).

Here are my two recommended lip liners that you can pair with any nude (dupes will be included):
